IDEAS for National Day of Prayer...

Download this School Event Checklist to help you plan a NDP observance at your school. (80 kb .doc file / created by an event coordinator in Colorado Springs, CO.)

Do your own prayer walk: choose a block or two in your community and pray silently for God's presence and blessing to come to each home, business, and school you pass.

Read from the Bible out loud on the steps of the state capitol or other public place. Do not despair of small beginnings. Be encouraged by the group of twelve people who were praying in front of their city hall. The mayor came out and asked for prayer.

Pray for pastors to begin praying together across denominational lines in order to bring unity to the community.

A mayor issued a city proclamation and had it published in the newspaper with a invitation for the public to come pray on the National Day of Prayer.

A mayor in Iowa has a prayer room in the city offices open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The public is invited to come pray.

Take prayer requests at NDP events, have a prayer group cover the requests, and then communicate back to each person that they had indeed been prayed for.

Live radio and television coverage by local stations.

Give programs to city office people and legislators before the NDP event so they will know what is happening even if they do not participate.

Indiana has a statewide high school essay contest. The winner goes to Washington, D.C. to read it at NDP events. A smaller, local contest could be open to the community schoolchildren with the winner reading at local NDP events.

Adopt a leader for prayer coverage.

Have a prayer vigil in the area before NDP to invite the Holy Spirirt.

Dramatic Skit: Two soldiers march across the stage; one carries the U.S. flag and an old man carries a Christian flag. The man with the Christian flag collapses, pretending to be dead. The question is asked, "Who will come forward to come pick up the flag and carry it in the next generation?" The young people in the audience are invited to come forward and sign a pledge to do their part in carrying it on. These youth's names were then passed to intercessors who committed to praying for the next year.

Pray for protection for NDP events! At 10:30am on the National Day of Prayer in Madison, WI, a federal court order had to be obtained in order to proceed with prayer out loud on the capitol steps. The state capitol police indicated that the "freedom from religion" group had complained.

Print "table tents" with local NDP events listed. Ask local restaurants and coffee shops if you may place them on the tables on National Day of Prayer. See the beautiful table tent available at the top of this page!
