One Way Up Prison Ministry
One Way Up Prison Ministry has evolved through the story of Sheila Robinson and her journey to salvation. Her story starts with sexual abuse as a child and ends in federal prison in Bryan TX. It includes a 20 yr crack-cocaine addiction, losing custody of all five of her children and the depths of physical violence. Compounding all of this was the fact she is a daughter of the legendary Ray Charles, named #2 on the 100 Greatest Singers of All Time by Rolling Stones!
When she finally surrendered to God’s will, she was at her lowest point and desperate for relief from the personal pain she had created. In what some have called “her anointed message,” Robinson transparently shares her story and testimony of God’s greatness with heart-warming messages connecting audiences to the power and love of God.
Professionally know as Sheila Raye Charles, Robinson chronicled her personal story in her book Behind The Shades and produced a collection of music by the same name.
Since 2007, Robinson has visited nineteen jails and prisons in 7 states. She has been to five of these facilities more than once. She has shared her story and message of hope and love at 170 plus churches, recovery groups and service organizations as she travels throughout the USA.
Following her marriage in 2010, Michael (Tony) Steptoe has joined her in sharing the message of One Way Up Prison Ministry. Steptoe brings his own story of how choices he made detoured him from a full athletic scholarship to 11 years in a state prison including time in a Teen Challenge Program.
One Way Up Prison Ministry has three goals; bring a message of hope and love to a “hopeless” society, support the development of tools and resources for inmates re-entering society and raise the awareness of the importance of prison ministry and mentoring. With both Robinson’s and Steptoe’s personal success anchored in a strong spiritual relationship, they are dedicated to sharing their direct relationship with God and encouraging others to develop their own.
